Warhammer 40,000 army deployed on an urban battlefield

The latest balance update (Q3 Data Slate) introduces the most dramatic changes to faction points and mechanics since the start of 10th edition. The changes affect not only the strongest armies, but also redefine how we approach board control and secondary mission scoring.

The end of Aeldari dominance?

The main design goal was to limit the mobility and firepower of the craftworld forces. By increasing the points cost of key units such as the Night Spinner and redefining Fate Dice, Aeldari players will need far greater precision in planning their turns. This is not the end of the faction, but it is the end of the era of easy wins.

Tactical insight: key changes

  1. 01. 15-20% points increases for Indirect Fire units.
  2. 02. Durability buffs for Death Guard and World Eaters armies.
  3. 03. New restrictions on free stratagems, including Overwatch.

The return of melee pressure

The second half of 2024 is shaping up as a triumph for aggressive melee armies. Points drops for World Eaters and improvements to Deep Strike mechanics for Chaos Daemons suggest the meta will move away from safe shooting behind cover and toward direct control of the table center.

For PLW40K competitors, this means revisiting rosters before the upcoming Grand Slam in Warsaw. Will we see the return of Ork hordes? Can Necrons keep their position despite changes to reanimation protocols? We will learn the answer during the live streams this weekend.
